I want to tell you about one of the bravest things I watched happen in my clinic this week. From the outside, it would have looked like nothing at all.
You see, one of my patients is a young rescue, a former street dog, then a shelter dog, before her family found her. She comes in for gentle, quiet work, the kind we do to help a nervous system learn it is safe. Her very first foster told the family something I have not been able to forget. The first raindrop this dog ever felt sent her into a panic. She had simply never learned that the world could be soft with her.
She still gets so anxious in the car that she has accidents on the way in. Her family stopped apologizing for it a while ago. This week they walked in beaming, because, as they put it, “she almost made it the whole way this time.”
And then came the line that stayed with me.
For the second week in a row, she climbed into the car entirely by herself. Nobody had to lift her in.
That is the whole story. And it is enormous.
Here is the thing I keep learning from the frightened ones. When you love an animal who is afraid of the world, progress almost never arrives the way you wish it would. It does not look like a cured dog. It looks like one inch. One raindrop she tolerates. One car ride that ends in a tail wag instead of a mess. One morning she decides, on her own, that the thing she used to fear is safe enough to jump into.
We are so trained to watch for the big fix that we can miss the inches entirely, and then quietly conclude that we are failing her. You are not failing her. Fear does not heal on a schedule, and it does not heal by being pushed. It heals in a body that is slowly, patiently learning it is safe.
And I want to say something, because after twenty years of practice I believe it with my whole heart. Your pet’s emotional health is not separate from their physical health. It is not the soft extra we get to after the “real” medicine. Fear lives in the body. A frightened nervous system talks to the gut all day long, it shifts digestion, it stirs up skin, it wears on the immune system. I have seen chronic stomachs settle when the fear settled first. When we care for the emotions, we are caring for the body. They were never two different things.
And so much of that safety comes from you, from the calm in your voice, the routine that never changes, the fact that you stopped counting the accidents and started counting the small brave choices.
So if you have a guarded one at home, the one who flinches, who hides, who needs a month to trust what another dog trusts in a minute, notice the inches this week. Write one down. The car door she chose. The hand she let touch her. And if you’d like to tell me about it, send us an email at info@integrativepet.com. Those are my very favorite emails to read.
Healing is rarely the dramatic thing we picture, and that so often it begins, quietly, in the nervous system.
Give your brave, careful one a scratch from me, on their terms, of course. 💜

💜 Three Gentle Things You Can Do for Your Pet’s Emotional Health This Week
- Count the inches. Keep a little note on your phone this week called “brave things.” Every small choice counts, the doorway approached, the visitor tolerated, the nap taken in the open. You will be amazed what a month of inches adds up to, and your vet will thank you for the record.
- Give them one unchanging ritual. Anxious bodies heal on rhythm. Pick one small thing that happens the same way at the same time every day, the slow evening sniff walk, the five quiet minutes on the mat after dinner, and protect it. Predictability is safety your pet can feel.
- Let us help their nervous system remember peace. Some of the most remarkable shifts we have watched in our frightened patients have come not from a prescription, but from our energy healing sessions, Reiki, tuning fork therapy, and flower essences, chosen for each animal. Sessions like the one in today’s story are exactly this kind of work, quiet, gentle, and profound for pets carrying old fear, grief, or anxiety. If you have been wondering how to help the tender one in your home, this is a beautiful place to begin.
Send us an email at info@integrativepet.com or visit integrativepet.com to book an energy healing session, and we will find a time that feels easy.
