Hello Friends,

I am writing to you on July 1st – wondering where the time has gone. Half of this year has gone by already – and things have changed so rapidly in the last few months. When I look back, I am still half bewildered, but sitting presently, I feel more grounded than before. Not a feeling of complacency – far from it – but empowered with a renewed sense of being able to make a difference even on an individual level. This past month I’ve met some wonderful new pets, I’ve gotten to know a few more of you personally, and, well, I have had to say goodbye to two very dear patients. This last part is always so hard. Each time, I hold the space in my heart, knowing that there is so much kindness and love in letting go and knowing how much courage and strength you need to say goodbye. I am with you.

In July, I am always reminded of the anxiety issues that many of our furry kids may face, especially when the fireworks go off. I thought it would be timely to offer a few suggestions for easing anxiety – whether you need it for this weekend or maybe other stressful situations coming up.

Here are some of the more natural/holistic ways to help with anxiety:

Essential oil – Lavender is a good choice and safe for pets. You can diffuse lavender in your environment, or you can put a drop on your finger and gently rub it onto their paws or chest area. doTerra and Young Living are two big reputable companies with good oils. I have also personally used Plant Therapy and liked their products. Know that not all essential oil is safe for pets. If you are interested in pet-specific essential oil, you can check out Animal EO.

Oral supplements – There are many products designed to reduce anxiety; these are some of my go-to’s:

  • ElleVet Sciences makes a quality CBD product. Know that CBD products still are not approved for animal use although it does have documented benefits. CBD can have drug interactions, so be sure to talk to your vet prior to starting.
  • Purina’s probiotic calming blend. I am always a big fan of probiotics, I first came across this product at my clinic, and it has helped many pets with their stress associated with boarding, and I am a big believer in happy gut = happy immune system = happy pet.
  • Just Food For Dogs Calm supplement I love the benefit of Passion Flower and Valerian Root Extract in reducing stress and anxiety.
  • Solliquin – Containing L-Theanine, an amino acid that has been researched to directly benefit in reducing stress.
  • Bach Flower Rescue Remedy, I have had many pet parents over the years who swear by this. Just a few drops into the water bowl will do the trick.

Others:

  • Adaptil – this is a pheromone-based product that has a gentle, relaxing effect.
  • Thunder Shirt – if your pet loves hugs and is comforted through touch and gentle squeeze, this is a great addition.

And, of course, talk to your vet if your pet has severe anxiety. There are still many options and prescription-strength medications that can help your pet get through episodes of anxiety. They can’t always tell us what’s on their mind or how they are feeling (I wish!), but you are their biggest advocates and if something seems off, let your doctor know!

As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. ️

Stay safe, stay well.
Sending love to all of you.

Dr. Lily
