Hello, lovely pet parents! š¶š±
This week, weāre taking a deep dive into nutrition again. This topic is so close to my heart because it really is theĀ foundation for health.Ā
When I was in vet school, I would often walk into the nutrition department and see shelves upon shelves of prescription kibble foods. These were introduced to us as the “perfect foods,” scientifically designed to meet specific disease states. And for the first decade of my career, those were the foods I recommended. They work well for what they are designed for, no doubt about it.
But then I began to notice something: while these foods are excellent for addressing specific issues, many pets have more complex health needs that go beyond a single condition. For example, a protein-restricted diet might support kidney and liver health but can be tough on the musculoskeletal system and general metabolism. And, many of these foods are high in carbohydrates and low in quality proteins.
The current nutritional guidelines establish a minimum standard for essential nutrients but donāt account for those that are vital for overall vitality and balance. Thereās also the long-standing notion that pets can thrive on the same diet day after day. While their basic nutritional needs might be met, their microbiomesāand therefore their overall healthācan suffer from such monotony. š
A Shift in Perspective š
I started to see significant improvements in petsā health when I began incorporating fresh ingredients into their diets. I also started to understand why some pets are “picky” eatersāthey crave variety, freshness, and quality ingredients just like we do! š„
Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with Billy Hoekman from Green Juju, a true expert in pet food formulation. The insights from our conversation were eye-opening, and I encourage you to give our latest podcast a listen! š§
It’s perfectly okay if your pet is on a kibble diet if it fits your familyās needs. Sometimes, our world becomes too polarized, dictating what should be considered “good” or “right.” Personally, I always lean toward less processed foods, but a pet on kibble diet can still thrive – consider havingĀ varietyĀ (change the brands and flavors often), opt forĀ less processedĀ ones (Cold-pressed, Air-dried or Freeze-dried, Raw kibbles, Baked Kibble) and read the ingredients to ensureĀ quality ingredients and whole ingredientsĀ are present (ideally not broken down into meals or by-products).Ā Ā Also,Ā adding fresh toppersālike quality proteins, vegetables, or fruitsāto your petās meals can be a game changer. š
Every family and every pet is unique, and the “best diet” is one that works for both. While Iām often asked for a blanket recommendation, itās all about finding what suits your lifestyle and your pet’s individual needs.
Here are a few general strategies to consider:
1. Variety is Key! š„š
Incorporating a variety of foods into your petās diet can significantly enhance their health by supporting a diverse microbiome. Just like in humans, a diverse microbiome is essential for optimal health. By adding fresh, nutrient-rich foods to their commercial diet, you can make a huge difference in their well-being. Try adding some fresh fruits and vegetables or mixing in some natural, healthy treats. š„¦š¶
2. Know the Limitations š
Current pet food regulatory standards only cover basic nutritional needs. True pet health goes beyond these standards. It’s essential to understand the unique needs of your pet. Donāt be afraid to look beyond the labels and investigate the quality of ingredients and sourcing. Your furry friend deserves the best! šŖš
3. Individualized Nutrition is Essential š©š
Every pet is unique, just like humans. What works for one pet may not work for another. Pay close attention to how your pet responds to different foods and toppers. Tailor their nutrition to suit their specific needs. Keep an open dialogue with your veterinarian or a pet nutrition expert to ensure your pet is getting the best care possible. š¾šØāāļø
4. Focus on Preventive Health Care š„
Integrating fresh foods into your pet’s diet plays a crucial role in preventive health care. Iāve personally witnessed amazing transformations just by making simple dietary changes. By enhancing their nutrition, you can reduce the likelihood of health issues and potentially save on future vet bills. Itās a win-win for both you and your furry friend! š±ā¤ļø
5. Embrace the Power of Fermented Foods šæš§¬
Fermented foods, such as raw milk and yogurt, offer significant health benefits by adding live probiotics to your pet’s diet. Billy shared some fascinating insights on this, and I’m excited to explore it further. If you’re curious about making your own fermented foods, check out Green Jujuās website for easy guides and tips. Your petās gut will thank you! šš„
