I read something recently that made a lot of sense to me. I wonder if it will for you too?

So apparently throughout history the world goes through seasons–I’m not talking about the spring, summer, fall, winter we experience each year.

I’m talking about seasons we go through collectively for years at a time.

Think about it: since 2008, we’ve been in a collective winter where everything has been a bit harder in terms of the environment around us. Okay. A lot harder 🫠

The last time this happened was during the great depression and world war 2 era and the world went through a winter.

And just like seasons in nature, seasons in history repeat. And after winter comes spring. Yay! 🌸

The authors of the book “The Fourth Turning” introduced me to this concept and I also thought about how we go through seasons in our own lives.

I think about my clients who are in personal winters.

That’s the thing about being a family vet: over the years, you and your pet parents become close.

This reminds me of when Debra, one of my longest-standing clients, who I’ve been seeing for over 10 years, went through a personal winter.

She was flying out to the Mayo Clinic every week to get support for an autoimmune disease, and the doctors were struggling to find a solution. (Hear about her incredible story in this week’s podcast)

Then, her beloved cavalier spaniel Sophie was diagnosed with a cancer.

And, of course, being her family vet meant I was able to pick it up early.

I saw her dogs Lukey, Sammy, and Sophie every week for acupuncture, and I could immediately tell if any one of them was feeling off.

We made a plan for Sophie – to manage her condition, but most of all, to make sure she has the best quality of life! There were specialists involved in Sophie’s care, and we were able to keep a very close eye on her condition. Most of all, I wanted to make sure that she remains comfortable no matter what.

I wish every pet parent could have a long-standing family vet. Because when you’re dealing with challenges in your own life, knowing that if a health issue comes up for your furbaby, it’s taken care of, that’s one less big thing to worry about.

There’s no trying to book an appointment only to find the vet you like isn’t available and having to see another vet and knowing the appointment won’t be long enough to get your questions answered anyway.

That’s not an experience I want for any pet parent.

I want every pet parent to know their family vet has got them.

We’ve got some work to do to make that the new normal (or the old normal?? I mean, everyone used to have a family doctor back in the day 💁‍♀️).

Anyway, I just want to say whatever season you’re going through personally right now, I’m sending you all my love 🫶

Your family vet,

Dr. Lily
