Dear Friends, 💜

Yesterday, my Instagram was awash with love and celebration for World Veterinary Day. As I scrolled through the vibrant posts, I found myself drawn into quiet reflection on my own 17-year journey through the veterinary world. It feels like only yesterday when I began at 18 as a veterinary technician, and even as a child, I couldn’t imagine a career outside of caring for animals. This has always been my calling.

In creating a small video montage of my journey from a conventional veterinarian to a holistic house call practitioner and now leading a fully integrative practice, I was struck by the evolution of not only my career but also the nature of the cases I’ve handled. From urgent and complex cases in a medicine/surgery specialty hospital to everyday challenges in general practice (lots of vaccines, spays/neuters, medicines and injections)—and finally to managing chronic conditions with a holistic approach, my career has been a fascinating ride.

One of the most pivotal aspects of my journey has been the integration of holistic medicine into my practice. In recent years, the rise of second opinion cases has particularly underscored the importance of having options. Many families come to us after being told there are no more options left in conventional care, seeking alternative paths that go beyond the typical. This intersection of conventional and holistic practices has highlighted a critical lesson: it’s not about choosing sides but about choosing what’s best for our patients.

The beauty of seeking a second opinion lies in the fresh perspectives it brings. In veterinary care, as in life, there are often multiple paths to wellness. Discussing the pros and cons of different approaches allows us to tailor our care to the unique needs of each pet and their family. It’s about collaboration, not confrontation. In fact, I also welcome and encourage any of my current clients to seek second opinions.

The Value of Second Opinion Consults

📗 Broader Diagnostic Insights

A second opinion can provide additional insights that might have been overlooked or deemed less likely in the initial evaluation. Different veterinarians come with varying experiences and specialties, offering new angles and considerations.

🌱 Alternative Treatment Options

Every vet has different training and expertise, especially with the rise of holistic and integrative medicine. A second opinion can introduce less conventional, yet potentially effective treatments that aren’t typically offered in standard practice.

✅ Confirmation of Diagnosis and Treatment Plans

Getting a second opinion helps confirm the original diagnosis and treatment plan. This reassurance can be comforting and builds trust in the treatment path chosen, ensuring that all possible options have been considered and the best decision is made for the animal’s health.

🩺 Education and Empowerment

Consulting another veterinarian educates and empowers pet families by informing them about their pet’s condition from another perspective. This knowledge enables them to make more informed decisions regarding their pet’s health.

💗 Peace of Mind

Knowing that multiple professionals agree on a pet’s health condition and treatment plan can provide immense peace of mind for pet owners. It reassures them that they are doing all they can for their pet’s well-being.

🐾 Finding the Best Fit for Your Pet

Sometimes, the approach or style of one veterinarian might mesh better with the pet and the pet owner’s philosophy and expectations. A second opinion can help find the best personal and medical fit for ongoing care.

Embracing an integrative approach doesn’t mean abandoning the science we trust but rather enhancing it with compassionate, holistic methods that address the root causes of illness. The outcomes can be extraordinary, reminding us that, ultimately, we’re all on the same team—united by our love for animals and driven by our commitment to their well-being.

As I continue to learn and grow in this field, I am ever more convinced that the journey of veterinary medicine is one of endless discovery. The road ahead is full of promise, and I am grateful to share this path with each of you.

Thank you for being a part of our community. Together, let’s continue to explore, learn, and care—for the love of pets and the people who love them.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Lily Chen 🌿🐕🐈‍⬛

Starlight Stories

Hello Unicorn Friends, 🦄

I’ve just returned from a rejuvenating spring break, filled with sunshine and an abundance of vibrant energy!  I spent my days galloping through lush meadows and soaking up as much vitamin D as possible. This season of renewal not only lifts spirits but also brings a host of opportunities to enhance the health and happiness of our beloved pets.

With the warmer weather and longer days, it’s the perfect time to increase our outdoor activities with our furry friends. Whether it’s more frequent walks or just playing fetch in the backyard, these activities not only strengthen the bond with your pets but also keep them physically fit. Additionally, consider the benefits of incorporating more natural elements into their routine. From switching to a diet rich in fresh, seasonal ingredients to using natural grooming products that are kinder to their skin and fur, spring is an ideal time to rethink and refresh your pet care practices.

Holistic health practices are also worth exploring during this season. Activities like pet yoga sessions or gentle massage therapies can greatly enhance your pet’s flexibility and overall well-being. Why not introduce music therapy to soothe and calm their environment? 🎵

As the days grow warmer, also remember to ensure your pets stay hydrated and have access to shade during their outdoor adventures. And with the onset of flea and tick season, it’s crucial to start preventative measures to keep these pests at bay.

Spring is a magical time for renewal and growth. Let’s use this season to not only rejuvenate ourselves but to also elevate the care we provide to our pets, ensuring they enjoy this wonderful time of year as much as we do. Here’s to a healthy, happy, and energetic spring!

With love,
