It all started with a questionâŠ
Janet, one of our lovely Concierge Pet Parents, asked me what water is best for our pets.
And you know how sometimes once you see something, you canât unsee it? Well, thatâs exactly what itâs like with drinking water.
Tap water in the U.S. is often contaminated with lead, arsenic, mercury, chloroform, pesticides, herbicides, forever chemicals, andâbrace yourselfâother peopleâs medications.
Yikes đł
Iâll share a website where you can check whatâs lurking in your local water in just a bit, but first, letâs talk about why high-quality drinking water matters so much for our pets.
You see, our pets live modern lifestyles, which means theyâre already exposed to a fair amount of toxins.
They encounter glyphosate, pesticides, antibiotics, and heavy metals through their diet, even if you do your best to buy organic, avoid abundance of seafood (heavy metals), and conscientious about grains (glyphosate).
These things are nearly impossible to dodge entirely.
Thatâs why clean water is so important.
Water is supposed to help the body detox.
But when the water itself is full of toxins it puts extra stress on the liver, kidneys, and other detox organs.
(And trust me, I get it. It can feel like thereâs a never-ending to-do list of things we have to do to compensate for our modern world being full of toxins and chemicals đ)
So, to make giving your pet good-quality water just a tiny bit easier, hereâs a simple place to start.
Go to this website and type in your zip code đ https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/
You might be horrified by what you seeâI know I was đ±
Once you know what contaminants are in your water, you can look for a filter that removes the biggest ones in your area
– You can do a little research to make sure your current filter is doing the job
– One resource is also the ionfaucet website: https://ionfaucet.com/
(I am sure there are other good resources, if you know of one, let me know!!)
Another option is ordering spring water
For example – Mountain Valley Spring Water (preferably in glass bottles)
This is just being mindful that plastic water bottles often sit in warehouses for months, allowing plastic to leach into the water.
At our practice, we personally love the Kangen Water System
I actually got this special Japanese water machine as a gift for my Unicorn Team during Vet Tech Week a few years back in October, and something amazing happened.
For the first time ever, I didnât get sick in October, November, or December, these are the months I usually get sick the most because my kids usually bring home all kinds of fun germs and viruses from school.
The only thing I changed? I stopped drinking tap water and switched to Kangen water.
Now, I even lug bottles home every day so my family can drink it. Weâre big fans!
If youâd like to try Kangen water, you can bring a empty gallon container to fill up and try (there is a small fee to fill the water)
And if youâre considering reverse osmosis, check out this clip from our Concierge Call where I just have a bit of hesitation to recommend this route (but it is certainly better than tap water!)
And most importantly, please know that if youâre reading this, youâre already one of the most devoted pet parents in the world.
Even if you canât provide the highest-quality water 100% of the time, itâs really okay.
Youâre doing so great đ
Love,
Dr. Lily
P.S. Thatâs one of the coolest things about our Concierge Connection Calls! Our Concierge Members get to ask whatever they want, and we dive into the topics theyâre most curious about.
We also bring in amazing guest speakers, like Jonathan, who spoke about doing ozone therapy at home, Billy from Green Juju who just did a class on nutrition and fermented foods. The next few ones are – Dr. Magda Szymer, whoâs leading a masterclass on Bach flower remedies, Dr. Rob Silver, whoâs teaching a class on medicinal mushrooms, and Dr. Hillary Wolfe, whoâs teaching a class on nutrition and home cooking for pets.
Hereâs what one of our lovely Concierge Pet Parents had to say:
“Hi Dr. Lily I just wanted to thank you for leading the meditation today it was exactly what I needed. It made many things clear for me and unexpected revelations through the journaling.
