Dear friends, 🩷
This week, glyphosate toxicity has been on my mind a lot. Since we started doing screening this year, I have noticed an alarming pattern in our pets harboring high glyphosate levels.
Why Is Glyphosate a Concern?
Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide worldwide, commonly found in products aimed at controlling weeds and grasses. While its effectiveness in agriculture is well-noted, recent studies in human medicine have raised significant concerns about its safety, linking glyphosate exposure to various health issues such as hormonal imbalances, liver disease, and potentially even cancer. A particularly compelling study published in the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health highlighted that high levels of glyphosate exposure could disrupt normal bodily functions and increase the risk of chronic diseases both in humans and animals.
What Does This Mean for Our Pets?
Our pets are part of our families, often sharing our environments and, unfortunately, our exposures. Dogs and cats can come into contact with glyphosate through treated grasses. They can also accumulate it through food sources as it is often sprayed right before harvest to dry out crops.
Here’s What We Can Do:
🌱Avoid treating your grass with harmful chemicals: Keeping the environment as clean and free of toxins as possible as our pets love to enjoy the outdoors (at least the doggies for sure!)
🥦 Shop Organic produce or foods whenever possible: Glyphosate is not allowed on organic crops so a good way to reduce the exposure is to shop organic whenever possible.
🩺 Test for Glyphosate Levels: To understand if our pets are at risk, the first step is a simple urine test to measure glyphosate levels. This can be done through your veterinarian, who can help guide you through the process.
🐾 Appropriate Detox if Needed: If tests show high levels of glyphosate, a detox protocol may be necessary. This could include changes in diet, the use of certain supplements that bind and remove toxins, holistic therapies (acupuncture and ozone) and ensuring plenty of clean, fresh water to help flush out their systems.
💗 Support Healthy Detox Pathways: Ensuring that our pets’ natural detoxification systems are robust is crucial. This involves a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants, proper hydration, and regular exercise, which help maintain the health of vital detox organs such as the liver, kidneys, GI tract, lungs, and skin.
Taking Action Together
As we navigate these challenges, it’s essential to stay informed and proactive in the choices we make for our pet’s environment and health routines. Opt for pet-friendly, glyphosate-free products in and around your home to reduce overall exposure. Encourage local parks and recreation departments to consider the use of safer alternatives for public spaces where our pets love to play.
This issue isn’t just about our pets; it’s about our entire ecosystem. By choosing safer alternatives and advocating for less harmful practices, we contribute to a healthier planet for all species.
Let’s pledge to protect our beloved animals from avoidable risks. After all, their health and joy are intertwined with ours, and every small step we take makes a big difference in their lives. 🌎💚
Warm regards,
